A prayer, either formal or informal, penitents pray at the sacrament of penance to express sorrow for their sins
Act of contrition
The act of giving money or material goods to anyone who is needy
Alms giving
The denial of Christ and the repudiation of the Christian Faith by a baptized person
Apostasy
The unity of all those living on earth (the pilgrim church), those being purified in purgatory (the church suffering), and those enjoying the blessings of heaven (the church in glory)
Communion of saints
An inclination to commit sin that can be found in human desires and appetites as a result of original sin
Concupiscence
Acknowledging and telling ones sins to a priest
Confession
Heartfelt sorrow and aversion for sins committed, along with the intention of sinning no more
Contrition
The first step of a sinner to repentance and returning in love to God the Father
Conversion
An honest assessment of how well we have lived God’s covenant of love
-leads us to accept responsibility for our sins and to realize our need of God’s merciful forgiveness
Examination of conscience
A serious penalty that means a baptized person is no longer “in communion” with the Catholic Church
-some are automatic including apostasy, heresy, and schism
Excommunication
God’s merciful pardon for our sins
-God always does this in the sacrament of penance and welcomes us back into the communion with Him
Forgiveness
False teaching that denies essential truths of the catholic faith
Heresy
Either good moral actions or evil actions; it answers the “what” question of morality and can objectively determine if an action is right or wrong
Moral object
Serious violations of God’s law of love that result in the loss of God’s life (sanctifying grace) in the soul of the sinner
-to commit these, there must be grave matter, full knowledge of the evil done, and full consent of the will
Mortal sin
The prayer by which a priest, by the power given to the church by Jesus Christ, pardons a repentant sinner in the sacrament of penance
Absolution
intercourse between a married woman/man and an unmarried man/woman
fornication
a sign of our true sorrow for the sins we have committed
-may be a prayer, an offering, a work of mercy an act of service to a neighbor, or a voluntary act of self-denial
penance
books for confessors in the past that listed all possible sins and the appropriate penance that should be given for each one
penitentiaries
people who admit their sins, are truly sorry for having sinned, and wish to be restored to the good graces of God and the Church
penitents
any sins committed by an individual
- mental sin includes our thoughts and attitudes
- actual sin includes our words and actions
personal sins
purification after death for those who died in God’s friendship but still need to be purified because of past sins before entering Heaven
-also called “the Church suffering”
purgatory
being reunited in peace and friendship with someone we have hurt by our sins-especially God, the Church, and ourselves
reconciliation
the act of repairing, restoring, or paying for any damage our sins have inflicted on others or their property
restitution
the status of sinners who have been forgiven
-Jesus suffered and dies so that humans could be saved from sin and restored to a loving relationship with the Father
righteousness
the secrecy priests are bound to keep regarding any sins confessed to them
sacramental seal
a break in the Church unity from the failure to accept the pope as the Vicar of Christ
schism
