Cognitive dissonance
we have a powerful motivation to be consistent, and cognitive dissonance is the distressing feeling we have when we observe ourselves behaving inconsistently or against our own sense of self-consistency
Dissonance reduction
change our attitudes so we no longer appear to be so inconsistent
Subjective self-awareness:
we consider ourself from the inside out, with the perspective of the subject “i”, that observes and interacts with the world
People with independent self
Objective self-awareness
the self can be experienced as the me that is observed and interacted with by others
People with interdependent self
First person memory:
because it contains the imagery you experienced firsthand
Third person perspective
envisioning how you thought people in the audience saw you
Are interdependent people more accurate in their self views?
Yes, bc interdependent people view themselves in a more objective way and consider themselves from the perspective of an audience, what would happen if they encountered stimuli that put them in a state of objective
