What do adsorbents do?
Bind to the wall of the GI tract. Bind to the causative bacteria or toxin, which is then eliminated through the stool
What should you be careful of with bismuth subsalicylate (pepto bismol)?
Not for children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chicken pox or influenza (risk for Reye’s syndrome).
What are the alarming but harmless effects of bismuth subsalicylate (pepto bismol)?
Temporary darkening of the tongue and stool.
What do anticholinergic drugs do to help diarrhea?
Slow GI tract motility.
What is important to remember about belladonna alkaloids?
They can cause serious adverse effects if used inappropriately.
What are belladonna alkaloids?
The anticholinergics atropine and hyoscyamine
How do bowel opiates help with diarrhea?
They decrease bowel motility and spasms
Decrease transit time through bowel
Reduce pain by relief of rectal spasms
What are intestinal flora modifiers?
Probiotics or bacteria replacement drugs
What are the adverse effects of adsorbent antidiarrheals?
Constipation, dark stools, increased bleeding time
What are the adverse effects of anticholinergic antidiarrheals?
Dysrhythmias, urinary retention, dry skin, flushing, hyper or hypo tension, headache/dizziness/anxiety/fatigue
What are the adverse effects of opiate antidiarrheals?
drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, lethargy, n/v, anorexia, constipation, respiratory depression, hypotension, urinary retention
