Ch 5 Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 basic types of tissue?
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Neural
What is the study of tissue?
Histology
What are Epithelial Tissues?
This tissue covers exposed surfaces of the human body ie skin
Also covers internal tubular structures ie blood vessels
There are no blood vessels
What are glands?
Glands help substances secrete
What is Avascular?
Blood vessels
What is the Apical surface?
The top of the epithelial cell
Where is The Basel surface?
Is located at the bottom of the epithelial cell
What are intercellular connections?
Ensure tissue integrity
The intercellular connection: Tight (occluding) junctions
Interlocking membrane proteins bind with adjacent plasma membranes
Intercellular connections: Adhesion belt
Protein locks adjacent cells
Intercellular connections: Gap Junctions
Protein channel that allows chemical communication between adjacent cells
Intercellular connections: Desmosomes
Proteins that firmly attach adjacent cells
Hemidesmosomes
Proteins that attach deepest epithelial cells to the base of the membrane
Types of Epithelial Tissue: Shape
1 Squamous - Thin and flat
2 cuboidal - cube shaped like little boxes
3 columnar - taller then they are wide slender rectangles
Types of Epithelial Tissue: Layers
1 Simple
2 Stratified
What are Exocrine glands?
Glands the secret into ducts and are eventually released into the epithelial surface ie sweat glands
What is an endocrine gland?
Releases secretions such as hormones directly into blood vessels
