Ch 10 Skeletal Muscle System Flashcards
Axial muscles
Support and position axial skeleton
Appendicular Muscles
Support and move the limbs
Tendons
Attaches muscles to bone
Dense regular collagen connective tissue
Origin
Immobile site muscle does not move
Insertion
Mobile moves the muscle
Agonist (or Prime Mover) Muscle
Muscle whose contraction is responsible for producing a particular movement
Antagonist Muscle
Muscle that opposes agonist
Temporalis muscle (o: Temporal bone; i: Mandible bone)
Chewing muscle
Eye Muscles
6 muscles move each eye
2 Oblique, 4 Rectus Muscles
Superior Rectus
moves eye to look superiorly
Inferior Rectus
moves eye to look inferiorly
Lateral Rectus
moves eye to look laterally
Medial Rectus
moves eye to look medially
Superior Oblique
rolls eye to look inferiorly and laterally
Inferior Oblique
rolls eye to look superiorly and laterally
Muscles of Thorax
Intercostal m and Diaphragm m – for respiration.
Muscles of the abdominal wall
Rectus abdominis m - flexes vertebral column.
