Why does the vine need sunlight?

A

To carry out photosynthesis which provides glucose for growth and ripening. Flowering and fruit set also benefit greatly from plenty of sunlight.

Which factors affect the amount of sunlight in the vineyard?

A

Latitude - further from equator = more sunlight
Aspect - equator-facing and steeper slope = more sunlight. Maximise at higher latitudes / cooler climates;
Seas and Lakes - nearby normally means more cloud cover however there can be redirected sunlight from surface of water

What impact can low light levels cause?

A
  1. Cloudy conditions, which can reduce sunlight, during flowering and fruit set can reduce crop size;
  2. During growing season it can reduce photosynthesis and can mean grapes dont ripen fully ie more acidic wine

A

Sunburn can lead to bitter flavours in the skins.
