Ch 5 The Growing Environment - Sunlight Flashcards
1
Q
Why does the vine need sunlight?
A
To carry out photosynthesis which provides glucose for growth and ripening. Flowering and fruit set also benefit greatly from plenty of sunlight.
2
Q
Which factors affect the amount of sunlight in the vineyard?
A
Latitude - further from equator = more sunlight
Aspect - equator-facing and steeper slope = more sunlight. Maximise at higher latitudes / cooler climates;
Seas and Lakes - nearby normally means more cloud cover however there can be redirected sunlight from surface of water
3
Q
What impact can low light levels cause?
A
- Cloudy conditions, which can reduce sunlight, during flowering and fruit set can reduce crop size;
- During growing season it can reduce photosynthesis and can mean grapes dont ripen fully ie more acidic wine
4
Q
What impact can excessive sunlight levels cause?
A
Sunburn can lead to bitter flavours in the skins.
