Ch. 5: TEXTURE Flashcards
What is TEXTURE and 4 types of textures?
—TEXTURE—refers to the interweaving of the melodic lines with harmony
- *4 TYPES**
1. MONOPHONY
2. POLYPHONY
3. HOMOPHONY
4. HOMORHYTHM
What is MONOPHONY?
—simplest texture; a single voice or line without accompaniment
What is POLYPHONY?
—“many voiced” texture with DIFFERENT MELODIC LINES
***(ALSO based on COUNTERPOINT-one line set against another)
What is HOMOPHONY?
(Most commonly heard)
—OCCURS when 1 melodic voice is prominent over the accompanying lines or voices
What is HOMORHYTHM?
—all voices or lines MOVE TOGETHER in the “same rhythm”
*Based on harmony loving in synchronization with a melody
What is IMITATION?
**when a melodic idea is presented in 1 VOICE, then restated in another—is a common unifying technique in polyphony
2 types of IMITATIVE work:
CANON and ROUND
*canon=strict imitative work
**round=each voice enters in succession with same melody that can NEVER be repeated endlessly
