Ch. 5 Project mgt Flashcards
A project
A series of related jobs usually directed toward some major output and requiring a significant period of time to perform.
Project mgt
defined as planning, directing, and controlling resources (people, equipment, material) to
meet the technical, cost, and time constraints of the project
Organizational structures for PM
Pure Project: where a self-contained team works full time on the project.
Functional Project: where team members are assigned from functional units of the organization. can work on other projects too
Matrix project : blend of pure and functional structure. the Pm manager decides what task and when they will be performed, the functional manager controls the people and tech used.
Steps of a project
-A project starts outas a statement of work
a task is a subdivision of a project
Gantt Chart
sometimes referred to as a bar chart, showing
both the amount of time involved and the sequence in which activities can be performed.
Earned Value Management
Technique that combines measures of scope, schedule, and cost for evaluating project progress
Critical Path Method
used to determine the project duration, tasks are critical - for repetitive type of projects(no uncertainty)
Types of Project mgt
Waterfall(Trad)- widely used progress flows steadily downwards & project implemented at the end when completely finished
Agile (Scrum)- Iterative(repitition) progress and project is gradually implemented
What type of Project Mgt addresses complex adaptive problems
Agile(scrum)- heavily used in software development
Categories of Projects
Conventional(Low-Tech)
Innovative (High-Tech)
PM Triangle about
Schedule, cost & scope
What is a tool used for
Help manage changes during project
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
Hierarchical breakdown of the tasks required to accomplish a project
Project Scheduling occurs before the WBS is complete
False it occurs after
Activity, event, milestone
-A task that consumes time &resources
-A point in time that rep the start & end of 1/more activities
-An event of major significance
