CH 5:Organs and organ systems Flashcards
3 body planes
Sagittal:
Divides body into left and right sides
Frontal:
Divides body into front and back
Transverse:
Divides body into upper and lower
Terms used to describe relative body position:
Anterior: at or near the front
Posterior: at or near the back
Proximal: nearer to the body trunk
Distal: Farther away from the body trunk
Superior: situated above or directed upward
Inferior: situated below or directed downward
Spaces within the body that holds organs
Body Cavities
Two major Body cavities
Anterior: front
Posterior: back
Anterior body cavity includes
Thoracic cavity
Two pleural cavities: Each one houses a lung
Pericardial cavity: houses the heart
Abdominal cavity
Contains GI organs
Posterior Cavity includes
Cranial cavity
(Houses the brain)
Spinal cavity
(Houses spinal cord)
Sheet like arrangements of epithelial cells lying upon connective tissues
Tissue Membranes
4 types of tissue membrane
Serous membrane: Lines and lubricates internal body cavities that arent open to the outside
Mucous membrane: Line passages that open to outside(airways)
Synovial membrane(jeopardy category)
Cutaneous membrane: Outer covering of the body (skin)
groups of organs that preform a common function
Organ system
different organ systems
Digestive system: mouth, throat, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
Lymphatic system: Lymph nodes, tonsils, and spleen
Organ system of skin
Integumentary system
(Skin, hair, nails, and glands)
-Protects from dehydration and injury
-Defends against microorganisms
-Regulates body temperatures
-Makes vitamin D
Layers of the skin
Epidermis: Outer Layer
Dermis: Middle “inner” Layer
Hypodermis: Bottom “supportive” Layer
Cells that make up the epidermis
Melanocytes:
Produces a dark brown pigment called Melanin
Keratinocytes:
Produce tough, waterproof proteins
What are Dermis
-Made up of dense connective tissue
-Lies below epidermis
-Allows the skin to stretch during movement
Accessory Structures of Dermis
Sebaceous Glands:
moistures and softens skin
Sweat glands:
Produce sweat,
Blood vessels:
Supply cells with nutrients and removes wastes
Sensory nerve endings:
Provides info about outside environment
