Ch 5 Membranes Flashcards
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration. Does not use energy
How does water diffuse across a membrane?
From an area of lower solute to an area of higher solute.
Tonicity
The ability of a surrounding solution to cause a cell to gain or lose water
Isotonic Solution
Solute concentration is the same as that inside the cell
Hypertonic solution
Solute concentration is greater than that inside the cell
Hypotonic solution
Solute concentration is less than that inside the cell
Plasmolysis
When in a hypertonic environment plant cells lose water causing the membrane to pull away from the wall
Osmoregulation
The control of solute concentrations and water balance
Facilitated diffusion
Transport proteins speed the passive movement of molecules across the plasma membrane
Active transport
Moves substances against their concentration gradients. Uses energy
