Ch 3. Pt 2. Flashcards
What do monosaccharides serve as?
Major fuel for cells and raw material for building molecules.
Disacharide
forms when a dehydration reaction joins two monosaccharides. 2 sugars
Glycosidic linkage
A covalent bond in which sugars are joined
Polysaccharides
The polymers of sugars which have storage and structural roles
Starch
A storage polysaccharide of plants, consists entirely of glucose monomers
Glycogen
a storage polysaccharide in animals
Cellulose
A major component of the tough wall of plant cells
Alpha glucose structure
helical
Beta glucose structure
straight
Chitin
structural polysaccharide, found in the exoskeleton of arthropods and also support fungi in their cell walls.
Lipids
the one class of large biological molecules that do not form polymers
Unifying feature of lipids
having little to no affinity for water due to consisting mostly of hydrocarbons.
Important lipids
fats, phospholipids, and steroids.
fatty acid
consists of a carboxyl group attached to long carbon skeleton
Fats
constructed from two types of smaller molecules: Glycerol and fatty acids
