sex
a way of distinguishing people based on biological traits such as reproductive organs, chromosomes, hormones, and secondary sex characteristics
gender
the social, cultural, and psychological traits and behaviors that a society considers appropriate for individuals based on their perceived sex
gender characteristics
- encompasses roles, norms, and expectations associated wit being male, female, or other identities beyond the binary framework
-distinct from biological sex, which refers to physical characteristics - understood as fluid, evolving, and influenced by personal identity, social interactions, and cultural interactions
gender identity
our internal understanding of our own gender
gender expression
behaviors, actions, and style through which we communicate our gender
cisgender identities
- someone who is cisgender when their gender identity and expression align with the social expectations of their sex assigned at birth
transgender identity
am umbrella term for individuals whose gender identity or gender expression doesnt coincide with social expectations based on the sex they were assigned at birth
nonbinary indentities
an umbrella term for individuals who present themselves “flexibly on a gender continuums”, identify outside of binary understanding of a gender
agender
not having a gender identity that can be categorized as male or female, or having a gender identity at all
genderqueer
someone whose gender identify neither man nor women, or is between or beyond
