Ch. 5. Concepts Flashcards
Months of the year
Months are named by number +月。
January : 一月
February:二月
March: 三月
。。。
November:十一月
December:十二月
Days of the week
For Monday-Satuday, months are named 星期 + number
Monday:星期一
Tuesday:星期二
。。。
Saturday:星期六
Sunday has a special name: 星期日 or 星期天
Day of the month
Expressed as number + 号 or 日,with 号 being more common in spoken Chinese.
How to express a date
The order is year + month + day of month + day of week
ie: Sunday, March 12, 2024 = 二零二四年三月十二号星期天
When written you may see: 2024 年 3 月 12 日 星期日
是 is often omitted in the complete sentence: 今天五月七号 = Today is May 7th
However,with 不,是 is required。
Expressing years
Each number is written individually + nian (年)
2020 = 二零二零年
2024 = 二零二四年
Note that most commonly, numbers are written in chinese using arabic numerals.
Sentences with adjective predicates
Some sentences may not have a typical “verb”.
I am happy: 我很高兴
I am not happy: 我不高兴
很 does not necessarily mean “very” here. It’s actually just a linking word and without it, the sentence carries a feeling of comparison. For example 他高兴 , 我不高兴
