The 14th amendment?
Idea Of equality. This clause has served for protection of African Americans, women and other groups
What are civil rights?
The rights of individuals not to be discriminated against on the basis of race, gender, nationality, religion, age etc. (protection of citizens by gov)
Constitutional inequality ended with what amendments?
13,14 and 15
What is the idea is “separate but equal”
Segregation of the races in public places was not unconstitutional as long as the facilities were equal
What were some methods used to prevent African Americans from voting?
They used literacy tests, grandfather clause, poll taxes and white primary
Define suffrage?
The legal right to vote to a handful of the population
Fifteenth amendment?
Guaranteed African Americans the right To vote
Poll taxes?
Small taxes levied on the right to vote that often fell due at time of year when poor sharecroppers had the least cash on hand.
Define white primary?
A device that permitted political parties to exclude African Americans from voting in primary elections.
What did the twenty-fourth amendment say?
Prohibited poll taxes in federal elections
Explain the voting rights act of 1965
Prohibited any gov from using voting procedures that denied a person the vote on the basis of Race or color and abolished the use of literacy requirements for anyone who had completed the 6th grade.
Explain the brown v. Board of education..
The court ordered states to admit African Americans to schools in a non discriminatory way. It violated the14th amendment guarantee of equal protection.
What was the reaction to school integration?
A few countries threatened to close their public schools and white enrollment in private schools soared.
What is De facto segregation?
Racial segregation that happens because of residence, although not required by law
What is De Jude segregation?
Racial segregation that is imposed by law
