1) checking the audience demographics

what are demographics?
the characteristics of the audience as a whole
what are the major demographic categories?
audience size, heterogeneity, status, composition and existence
what is heterogeneity?
the variety or diversity among audience members; dissimilarity
what is the difference btw a voluntary versus captive audience?
voluntary- choosing to show up
captive- there for ulterior reasons
what is a voluntary audience?
an audience that takes an interest in the speech the speaker will be giving
what is a captive audience and what must you remember?
a captive audience is one that is not interested but there because it may be required; it is important to not assume you have a voluntary audience
what is audience culture?
subjective factors that characterize a particular audience and make its situation distinct.
in understanding aud. psych, what is selective exposure?
a tendency to expose oneself to messages that are important personally and that are consistent with what one already believes
what is selective attention?
conscious or unconscious choice about whether or not to focus intently on a speech, absorb and process its contents, and take it seriously.
how can the speaker motivate the audience in at least 3 ways?
1) make the message personally important to listeners
2) make the message stand out
3) make the message easy to follow
what is perception?
the interpretation or understanding given to a speech; the meaning it has for a listener
what are the two methods used in audience analysis?
the formal and informal methods
what are some formal methods?
focus groups, surveys and interviews
what are some informal methods?
reflect on classmates interests, interview ppl in your demographic, newspapers and magazines, library research and direct observation
