Ch 5/6 Flashcards
Niche
organisms role in its environment
Immigration vs Emigration
i: organisms move into population
e: organisms leave population
Density Dependent vs Density Independent factors
d: stress, predation, competition, disease (changes as population size changes)
i: natural disasters, human activities (factors affect all populations regardless of population size)
Exponential growth
Humans always show exponential growth, (unlimited resources)
Population Dispersion
describes the arrangement of individuals within a habitat at a particular point in time (random, uniform, clump)
Competitive Exclusion
when species are eliminated in area due to competition
Fundamental vs Realized niche
F: everything an organism would do if there was no competition
R: everything an organism does because of interaction and competition
Parasitism vs Mutualism vs Commensalism
p: organism lives on, or in another, using it for nutrients (tapeworm, fungi, ticks) +/-
m: when both species benefit (clean fish & sharks, pollinators & flower) +/+
c: 1 organism is benefited and other organism isn’t affected (fish ride on sharks, vines on trees)
Primary vs Secondary succession
P: new group of organism grows where there was not life before (new island)
S: new growth in place where there was a past life that got destroyed (fire)
Pioneer Species
organism that starts succession
Biodiversity and resilience
An organism that can bounce back
