Storage of medications in the pharmacy:
all bottles must remain closed. should not be expired.
handling of medications in the pharmacy:
never handle meds with bare hands. dispose of any gloves used to prevent cross-contamination. equipment used to count should be cleaned before and after use. trained pharmacy staff only should be allowed in storage and dispensing areas.
disposal of medications in the pharmacy:
returned medications should be stored in a disposal container until they are transported.
The CDC:
studies diseases and how to prevent the spread of diseases. they are the first agency to come up with the “standard precautions” (main role is to make healthcare professionals aware of how diseases are spread and how to stop the spread)
OSHA:
they make sure places that employ healthcare workers provide equipment and means for them to follow precautions outlined by the CDC. they are mainly concerned with the workers themselves. they came up with the “universal precautions”
What is a material safety data sheet? (MSDS)
a document that provides workers with procedures for safely handling or working with a particular substance.
What are the main purposes of a (MSDS)?
to inform workers and aid in emergency services
What is an exposure incident?
an incident that occurs when the eyes, mouth, mucous membranes, or non-intact skin comes in contact with a pathogen in a substance.
