What are the different methods of drug administration?
enteral and parenteral
Enteral:
administration of a substance via the alimentary canal (digestive tract)
Parenteral:
administration of a substance through anything other than the digestive tract
Enteral forms:
by mouth or per rectum
Parenteral forms:
Injections, inhalation, topical, and transdermal
Things that should be on a prescription bottle:
pt name, name address and number of pharmacy, rx number, prescriber name, name strength and dosage of drug, quantity, directions, date of dispensing, number of refills, expiration date, drug description, and auxiliary info
Types of packaging: primary packaging
packaging in direct contact with medication (vials, bottles, and blister packs)
Types of packaging: secondary packaging
packaging not in direct contact with medication (boxes, caps)
Types of packaging: unit dose packaging
each dose is packaged individually to decrease med errors (blister packs, medication strips, inhalers)
Types of packaging: device packaging
provides an administration device to deliver meds (droppers, prefilled syringes, sprays)
