Ch. 42 Circulation And Gas Exchange Flashcards
Three basic components of a circulatory system:
- A Circulatory fluid
- A set of interconnecting tubes
- A muscular pump (heart)
Vocab:
Open circulatory system
The circulatory fluid bathes organs directly
Vocab:
Closed circulatory system
Blood is confined to vessels and is distinct from the interstitial fluid.
What do arteries do?
Arteries carry blood away from the heart to organs throughout the body.
Vocab:
Arterioles
Small vessels that convey blood to the capillaries.
Vocab:
Capillaries
Microscopic vessels with very thin, porous walls.
Vocab:
Capillary beds
- network of capillaries
- infiltrate each tissue, passing within a few cell diameters of every cell in the body
Vocab:
Atria
The chambers that receive blood entering the heart
Vocab:
Ventricles
The chambers responsible for pumping blood out of the heart
