Ch. 4 Male Anatomy and Sexual Response Flashcards
External Parts of Penis: Glans
end or tip of penis
External Parts of Penis: Meatus or urethral opening
opening at the end of the glans; urine and semen pass through
External Parts of Penis: Body or shaft
main part of the penis
External Parts of Penis: Corona
raised ridge separating glans from the body of the penis.
External Parts of Penis: Foreskin or prepuce
additional layer of skin that forms a sheath-like covering over the glans. Absent in circumcised penises
Internal Parts of Penis: Corpora cavernosa
the two bodies lying on top
Internal Parts of Penis: Corpus spongiosum
single body lying on the bottom of the penis; urethra runs through the middle
Male Genital Cutting: Circumcision
surgical cutting away or removal of foreskin
Male Genital Cutting: Supercision
making a slit in the length of the foreskin on the top
Male Genital cutting: Subincision
making a slit on the lower side of the penis along its entire length
Scrotum (scrotal sac)
- Loose pouch of skin, lightly covered with hair
- Contains the testes
Scrotum is controlled by 2 muscles…
○ Dartos muscle – causes skin surface to wrinkle
○ Cremaster muscle – elevates scrotal sac closer to body
Testes (gonads or reproductive glands)
- Manufactures reproductive cells, sperm
- Manufacture sex hormones, testosterone
Inside the Testes: Seminiferous tubules
○ long series of threadlike tubes in testes
○ manufactures & stores sperm
Inside the Testes: Interstitial cells
○ produce testosterone
○ found in connective tissue between seminiferous tubules
Epididymis
○ long tube coiled into a small crescent-shaped region on the top and side of the testis
○ stores & matures sperm
Vas Deferens
tube that goes up and out of scrotum and passes through the prostate, where it is called the ejaculatory duct
Sperm
- Several hundred million produced a day
- Take 64-72 days to form in the seminiferous tubules
- Stored in Epididymis for 20 days
- Upon ejaculation, travels the length of the vas deferens and out the urethra
- Carries XY genetic information
Seminal Vesicles
- Two sac-like structures that lie above the prostate, behind the bladder, and in front of the rectum
- Produces 70% of the seminal fluid of the ejaculate
Prostate
○ lies below the bladder
○ size and shape of a chestnut
○ secretes a milky alkaline fluid that is part of the ejaculate
Cowper’s Glands or bulbourethral glands
○ located below prostate
○ empty into urethra
○ produces a secretion before ejaculation
Tanner Stages
Stage 1: ~ 9 years old
Stage 2: ~11 years old
○ pubic hair development
Stage 3: ~13 years old
○ Voice changes
Stage 4: ~14 years old
○ Acne
○ Arm pit hair
Theories of Sexual Response: Masters and Johnsons
- Excitation
- Plateau
- Orgasm
- Resolution
Sexual Inhibition
- Concerns for adverse event (pregnancy, STD, etc)
- Nonsexual challenge
- When sexual pursuits impact daily functioning
- Social or environmental pressures
- Decreased reproductive benefit
Myths about Male Orgasm
- Size Matters
- Supplements can lower refractory period
- “Blue balls” are deadly
- Premature ejaculation is incurable
- Men don’t fake orgasm
- Men must ejaculate to be satisfied or experience sexual pleasure
