Ch. 4 - Integumentary System Flashcards
Epidermis
The outermost layers of cells in the skin. It is a stratified squamous epithelium
Stratum corneum
1st layer of epidermis.
Multiple layers of flattened dead cells.
Stratum lucidum
2nd layer of epidermis.
Translucent layer that is only on thick skin
Stratum granulosum
3rd layer of epidermis.
Couple layers of darkly stained cells kertinocytes.
Stratum spinosum
4th layer of epidermis.
Several layers of thin pincushion-shaped cells
Stratum germinativum/Stratum basale
5th layer of epidermis.
Couple layers of stem cell superior to hard-stained basal lamina as well as melanocytes and Merkel cell/tactile discs.
Dermis
Between the epidermis and subcutaneous tissues, that consists of connective tissue.
Papillary layer
1st layer of dermis (superficial)
Contains loos connective tissue w/ projections superior called papillae.
Reticular layer
2nd layer of dermis (deep).
Dense irregular connective tissue that contains blood vessels, hair follicles, nerves, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.
