Ch 4- Gravity Flashcards
Gravitational fields
Always pulls to centre of object
Effect of gravity is greatest when closer to the object
Inversely proportional to r2 (distance)
Newton’s universal law of gravitation
Force due to gravity is proportional to masses but inversely proportional to distance
R-distance from CENTER to CENTER
Altitude
Distance from center object to surface of planet
“r” is combined distance of radius of earth & altitude of object
Elevator questions
Going up- Fn is bigger than Fg, feels heavier
Going down- Fn smaller than Fg, feels lighter
Fn is apparent weight
Fg is true weight
Apparent weight= apparent mass x g
If speed is constant Fn=Fg
Mass vs weight
Mass-constant, independent
Weight- varies (9.81 varies from place to place), dependent on location
