Have one attachment on a laryngeal cartilage and the other attachment on a non-laryngeal structure
Extrinsic muscles
Acronym for the infrahyoid muscles:
Some otters tactfully swim
Strap muscles; runs from hyoid bone to a structure below; if they attached to a point below the hyoid they must pull the larynx down
Infrahyoids

Sternohyoid, omohyoid, thyrohyoid, Sternothyroid
Contraction pulls the hyoid bone down; runs from the sternum to the hyoid bone
Sternohyoid
Contraction depresses the hyoid bone; has an inferior and superior belly that are joined by an intermediate tendon
Omohyoid
Contraction either depresses the hyoid bone or elevates the thyroid cartilage
Thyrohyoid
Contraction depresses the thyroid cartilage; enlarges the pharynx (for swallowing) by pulling down the larynx and forward (after swallowing)
