Ch. 2 Respiratory Flashcards
Flexible tube with 16-20 hyaline cartilage rings that open posteriorly
Trachea
Respiratory tract:
Nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, plurae (linings)
Serves right and left lungs (primary bronchi)
Mainstream bronchi
Supply the lobes of the lungs (lobar bronchi)
Secondary bronchi
Supply segments of the lobes (tertiary bronchi)
Segmental bronchi
Small and at its end becomes the alveolar duct which leads into the alveolar air sacs and into the alveoli. Capillary beds wrap the alveoli.
Terminal bronchioles
Where the gas exchange takes place in lungs
Alveoli
Which lung has three lobes?
Right lung
Which lung has two lobes?
Left lung
Space that occupied the heart (and other stuff)
Mediastinum
Lines the inner thoracic wall and lungs, binds the organs by attaching, but not fixing them within the thorax
Pleura
The lungs pull down due to the association between the pleurae and diaphragm
Diaphragm contractions
Boyle’s Law: negative pressure (inhaling)
Increase the volume and decrease the air pressure
Boyle’s Law: positive pressure (exhaling)
If you decrease the volume the air pressure will increase
