Ch. 2 Muscles Of Inspiration Flashcards
Rib cage movement is increased by raising of the curved ribs (side to side)
Transverse
Rib cage movement is increased by the contraction of the dome shaped diaphragm
Vertical dimension
Rib cage movement is increased by simultaneous forward and upward movement of the sternum
Anterior-posterior dimension
Deep abdominal breathing (forced inspiration breathing for speech). Also involves accessory muscles of inspiration.
Diaphragmatic breathing
Primary muscle inspiration, 2nd most important muscle, separates thorax and abdomen, striated skeletal muscle because it moves skeletal structures
Diaphragm
Serves as a strong and secure floor for the heart
Central tendon
Three openings in the diaphragm:
Aortic opening (aortic hiatus), esophageal opening (esophageal hiatus), foramen vena cava
Permits the descending aorta to pass from the thorax into the abdomen
Aortic opening (aortic hiatus)
The esophagus and several small arteries pass through it
Esophageal opening (esophageal hiatus)
Several nerve bundles and lymph vessels pass through it
Foramen vena cava
Tells diaphragm what to do
Phrenic nerve
