Ch 4 Arthrokinematics Flashcards
End feel
Subjective assessment of quality of the feel when slight pressure is applied at the end of a joints passive range of motion
Osteokinematic motion
Flx, ext, and,add, rotation
Joint movement on another
3 types of normal end feel
Bony, soft tissue stretch, soft tissue approximation
Normal bony end feel
Hard and abrupt limit to passive joint motion
Ex: extension of elbow
Soft tissue stretch
Firm sensation that has slight give when the joint is taken to end rom
MOST COMMON end feel
Soft tissue approximation
When muscle bulk is compressed stopping joint motion
Abnormal bony end feel
Sudden hard stop usually felt well before the normal end of rom
Boggy end feel
When soft tissue edema is present (ankle sprained)
Muscle spasm
Reflexive muscle guarding during motion
Empty end feel
No mechanical limitation of rom in joint. Pain is thinly thing that stops it.
Springy block
A rebound movement is felt at rom
Usually torn cartilage
Arthrokinematic motion
Adjoining joint surfaces move on each other during osteokinematic joint movement
Joint surface motion
Joint play
Passive movements between joint surfaces done by passively applying external force
Convex concave rule
Concave on convex moves joint in same direction
Convex on concave moves joint in opposite directions
Congruent
Joint surfaces have maximum contact with each other , tightly compressed
Closes packed
