Ch 2 Skeletal System Flashcards
Appendicular skeleton
126
Arms, legs, extremeties
Axial skeleton
80 bones
Head, thorax, trunk
Compact bone
Hard outer shell (strength)
Cancellous bone
Porous and spongy inside. Resists stress and strains
Epiphysis
Area at each end of bone.
Diaphysis
Main shaft of bone (mostly compact bone)
Medullary canal
Hollow, contains marrow and nutrient arteries.
Endosteum
Lines medullary canal
Contains osteoclasts for bone resorption
Metaphysis
Flared part at end of bone
Periosteum
Thin membrane covering all bone except articular surfaces.
Pressure epiphysis
Where children’s bones receive pressure from the opposing bone making up the joint.
Growth in children starts here
Traction epiphysis
Where tendons attach to bones.
are subject to pulling.
Long bones
Length greater than width
Only in appendicular skeleton
Short bones
Equal dimensions of H,L,W
None in axial skeleton
Flat bones
Broad surface, fairly thin.
