Ch 3 Articular System Flashcards
3 types of fibrous joints
Synarthrosis, syndesmosis, gomphosis
3 types of joints
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
Fibrous joint
Thin layer of fibrous periosteum between two bones
Ex:sutures in skull
Synarthrosis
Suture joint
Syndesmosis
Ligamentous joint. Great deal of fibrous tissue holding the joints together
Ex: interosseous membrane
Cartilaginous joint
Amphiarthrodial joint
Either hyaline cartilage or fibrous cartilage between the two bones.
Ex: vertebral joints
Synovial joint
Diarthrodial joint
No direct union between the bones. Instead, there is a capsule filled with synovial fluid.
Classifications of diarthrodial joints
Non axial, uni axial, biaxial, triaxial
Non axial joint
Irregular plane
Gliding
Ex: intercarpals
Uniaxial
Angular motion in one plane around one access
Hinge joint
Ex: elbow
Biaxial joint
Occurs in two different directions
Ex: the wrist
Triaxial joint
Has motion in all 3 axis
Ball and socket
Ex: shoulder
Ligaments
Bone to bone
Tendons
Muscle to bone
Synovial membrane
Thick vascular connective tissue that secretes synovial fluid
Hyaline cartilage
Articular cartilage
Covers the ends of opposing bones, provides a smooth surface for synovial joints.
Lacks its own blood and nerve supply so it must get its nutrition from synovial fluid…. It can NOT repair itself from damage.
Fibrocartilage
Acts as shock absorber
Ex: meniscus
Labrum
Is the shoulder fibrocartilage
Deepens the glenoid fossa
Elastic cartilage
Help maintain a structures shape
Ex : ear
Tendon sheaths
Surround the tendon when it is subject to pressure of friction
Aponeurosis
Broad, flat tendinitis sheet
Bursae
Small, padlike sacs found around most joints to reduce friction
Sagittal, frontal, transverse plane
Define and explain
Sagittal plane is what axis
Frontal?
Transverse?
Frontal
Sagittal
Vertical
Dislocation
Complete separation of two articular surfaces of a joint.
Subluxation
Partial dislocation of a joint, usually occurs over time
Osteoarthritis
Caused by the breakdown and loss of cartilage
Sprains
Teeing of ligament fibers
Strain
Over stretching of muscle fibersm
Synovitis
Inflammation of synovial membrane
Tenosynivitis
Inflammation of the tendon sheath
Give an example f a synarthrodial joint in the axial skeleton
Suture of the skull
