Ch. 38: Angiosperm Reproduction Flashcards
What flower structures are analogous to the anther and filament?
anther + filament = stamen
stigma + style = pistil
Why are 2 sperm required for producing a sed with 1 embryo?
Double fertilization: 1st sperm clears path for 2nd sperm
1st sperm: initiate the death of one of the two synergies
-fertilizes the egg
2nd sperm: combines with the two polar nuclei forming a triploid nucleus (endosperm, 3n)
-prevents angiosperm from squandering nutrients on infertile ovules
Is a pollen grain a gametophyte or sporophyte?
(male) gametophyte
What protective role does the hypocotyl play as a seedling germinates and emerges from the soil?
Hypocotyl will terminate in the radical and become a plant stem
- protect the cotyledon upon germination
- will tell the cotyledon when two develop at germination
- protect the inside of the seed
Why are fruits generally attractive to animals?
- colorful
- high in sugar / sweet
Why are flowers generally attractive to flying insects?
- colorful
- high in sugar
What feature of angiosperms probably explains their position as dominant land plants? Why?
Fruits (or flowers)
People and animals love them and are attracted to them.
- the more fruits consumed, the more their seeds are spread and fertilized
