Main term
Term that identifies disease conditions or injuries, it is identified in bold print and set flush with the left margin of each column in the Alphabetic Index.
Manifestation
Symptom of a condition that is the result of a disease
NEC
Abbreviation for “not elsewhere classifiable” that means “other specified”
Nonessential modifier
Term that is enclosed in parentheses; its presence or absence does not affect code assignment
NOS
Abbreviation for “not otherwise specified” that means “unspecified”
Section
Consists of a group of three-character categories that represent diseases or conditions that are similar
“See”
A mandatory cross-reference that advises the coder to go to another main term
“See also”
Cross-reference that instructs the coder about the possibility that there may be a better main term elsewhere in the Alphabetic Index
