Ch. 3 Learning and Memory Flashcards
What is encoding?
Putting new information into memory
What is sensory memory?
First and most fleeting type of memory
Preserves original sensory form and lasts less than a second
Iconic (visual) and echoic memory (auditory)
What is the short term memory?
Fades in 30 seconds and can contain 7 items
Housed in the hippocampus
What is the working memory?
Keep a few pieces of information in our consciousness at once and manipulate the information
What is long term memory?
Primarily controlled by the hippocampus but some memories over time are moved to the cerebral cortex
Compare implicit and explicit memory.
Implicit - skills, habits, conditioned responses (nondeclarative), procedural memory (how to do things)
Explicit - require conscious recall, episodic memory (recollection of life experiences), semantic memory (ideas, concepts, facts)
Explain recognition, recall, and retrieval of information.
Recognition is stronger than recall
Retrieval of information is often based in priming which utilizes the interconnected ideas, the brain organizes ideas into a semantic network
What is long term potentiation?
Conversion of short term to long term memory
Strengthening neuronal connections due to increased NT release and adding receptor sites
