CH 3 Feedback Cycle Flashcards
What is Feedback
The user needs to be informed about what has already happened, in order to know what to expect
Gulf of Execution 🤯
The difference between the intentions of the user and what the system allows them to do
Gulf of Evaluation
The difficulty of assessing the state of the system and how that artifact supports the discovery and interpretation of that state
Cycle of Gulf of Execution 🤯
Intent to act-> Plan actions -> Execute actions
Cycle of Gulf of Evaluation
Perceive system state-> Interpret perception -> Evaluate the interpretation
Input devices
Mediate our actions with a computer system
Ex. Device + software affordances -> guide actions
Output devices
Mediate feedback from the computer system
Ex. Device feedback->informs evaluation
Direct manipulation
A natural end point of good feedback cycles
The user should feel as if they are directly interacting with the task
Sensory feedback conflict
Ex. We are travelling, but physically sitting in chair
Unresolved sensory conflict
Discomfort or cyber sickness
Minimising sensory conflict in VR
- Translation and rotations
- Strafing ( disorientation)
- Teleportation and other position changes
- Accommodation/ Convergence conflict (Visual strain)
How to narrow the gulf of evaluation?
- give feedback frequently
- give feedback immediately
- balance feedback with the action
- vary the feedback
- use direct manipulation where it’s possible
How to narrow gulf of execution?
- use affordances or map to real world actions
- make the things visible (for novice users)
- reduce the number of steps (for expert users)
- provide feedback
- minimise the effort
