Ch 3 - Cells, Plasma Membrane Flashcards
Lipids of the Cell Membrane
1) Phosopholipids (makes up most of the phospholipid membrane)
2) Cholesterol (“stiffen” the membrane)
Protiens of the Cell Membrane
1) Transport proteins: move substances (active or passive) from one side to the other
2) Receptor proteins: relay messages to cell interior
3) Enzyes: proteins catalyze chemical reactions
4) Cell-cell recognition proteins: allows body cells to recognize other body cells
5) Attachment proteins: helps hold some membrane proteins in place, maintains cell shape
6) Intercellular junctions: some proteins are used to link cells together; cell migration
Carbohydrates of the Cell Membrane
Extracellular surface, glycolipids and glycoproteins create glycocalyx
Types of Junctions
1) Tight Junctions - impermeable
2) Desmosomes - bind cells together, semipereable
3) Gap Junctions - “communication” junctions
