What is ethics?
Knowledge of right and wrong, tells people what they should do.
What is laws?
Tells them what they most do.
What are residents rights?
Quality of life
Services/activities to maintain high level of wellness
fully informed about rights/services
participate in the own care, make independent choices
privacy /confidentiality, dignity/respect/freedom, security of possessions
What is neglect?
Failure to provide needed care that results in physical, mental, or emotional harm to a person. EX: leaving bedridden resident alone for a long time
What is negligence?
Actions, or the failure to act or provide the proper care for a resident, resulting in unintended injury. EX: na forgets to lock resident’s wheelchair and they fall
What is malpractice?
Occurs when a person is injured due to professional misconduct through negligence, carelessness, or lack of skill.
What is a mandated reporter?
People who are legally required to report suspected or observed abuse or neglect because they have regular contact with vulnerable people.
What happens when there is a complaint against NA’s?
Suspended immediately, pending investigation
Facility administrator & state survey agency are notified
What is ombudsman?
Advocates for residents
What is an advance directives?
Legal documents that allow people to decide what kind of care they want to have in an event that they are unable to.
Examples of advance directives.
Living will- medical care of what the person wants or doesn’t want when they can’t decide.
Power of attorney- Signed, dated, and witnessed legal document that appoints someone to make medical decisions.

Do not resuscitate
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Medical procedures used when the heart and lungs have stopped working.
