CH. 26 -- Hand Washing Flashcards
ubiquitous
means everywhere – bacteria are ubiquitous
BACTERIA
- ubiquitous
2. most bacteria are not pathogenic in their natural habit, only 1 in 50,000 bacteria causes disease
opportunistic pathogen
infection caused only once pathogen is given the proper circumstance/situation
normal biota
harmless and some are even beneficial, naturally live on skin, gut, saliva, etc. – are NOT easily removed from skin
transient organisms
found on the skin for short periods of time, but do not grow there – acquired from contact with contaminated surafaces and are usually easily removed – can cause disease – easily transferred person to person
Hand Washing
best practices that can limit the transmission of pathogens from one human to another – 3 components: soap or detergent, friction and antimicrobial agent
Saponification
soaps are produced by this process – involves treating a fat with alkali (base) in the present of heat. Soaps and detergents emulsify the skin oils in which bacteria is trapped
Surfactants
are amphipathic, which means they have a lipid-soluble portion and water-soluble portion
Friction
helps us physically remove the emulsified skin oil with the trapped bacteria
Antiseptic
antimicrobial agent – helps us remove remaining bacteria without damaging the skin
amphipathic
has a lipid-soluble portion and water-soluble portion
