Ch. 25 (Sleep & Rest) Flashcards
What describes the inability to fall asleep, difficulty stay asleep or premature waking?
insomnia
try to determine whether its insufficient quantity or poor quality
on exam:
What describes falling asleep earlier in the evening and awakening earlier in the morning?
phase advance
What describes a disorder in which at least five episodes of cessation of breathing, lasting at least 10 seconds, occur per hour of sleep, accompanied by daytime sleepiness?
sleep apnea
nasally deep snoring
What describes a delay in the onset of sleep (leads to being more sensitive to noise)?
sleep latency
What are the sleep stages?
- stage 1: begin to nodd off
- stage 2: deeper state of relaxation
- stage 3: early phase of deep sleep
- stage 4: REM, rapid eye movement (WILL BE ON EXAM)
What are some barriers to sleep quality that can affect insomnia?
- environmental (noise)
- medications (many interact w/sleep)
- pain
What is a large risk factor of obstructive sleep apnea?
obesity
What kind of sleep apnea is described as a blockage in upper airway interfering with normal air flow?
obstructive sleep apnea
What position should be avoided for pts with sleep apnea?
supine position
sitting up allows for better opening of the airway (think tongue)
What is given/treatment for sleep apnea?
CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine
What are some environmental characteristics can we change to help promote rest and sleep?
- temperature set to their preferences
- lower noise
