Ch 23: Outcome Measurements Flashcards
Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)
Measure of level of consciousness which also serves as a level of brain injury
Score range between 3 and 15
3 components: eye opening, verbal response, and motor response
Which factor of TBI is a good predictor of long term issues following brain injury?
PTA
the longer the the period of PTA, the more likely the it is that the person will experience long term issues
Abbreviated injury scale (AIS) for the head
1 time measure of the severity of head injury
Ranges from 1 (minor) to 6 (unsurvivable)
Part of the Injury Severity Score (0-75)
Loss of Consciousness
Communicates severity of injury and related short term prognoses.
LOC <30 min = mild
LOC >30 min but <24 hours = moderate
LOC >24 hours = severe
LOC ends when GCS motor score = 6 (TBIMS)
JFK Coma Recovery Scale- revised
Used with individuals who have an extended disorder of consciousness (vegetative or minimally conscious state)
Disability Rating Scale (DRS)
Older measure of brain injury (research instrument)
8 item assessment of impairment, disability, and handicap or participation
Can be used from coma to community
Participation section has an item on employability (public domain)
The Rancho Los Amigos Level of Cognitive Functioning Scale (LCFS)
Assessment of cognitive function
1 No response 2 Generalized 3 Localized 4 Confused-agitated 5 Confused inappropriate 6 Confused appropriate 7 Automatic appropriate 8 Purposeful appropriate
CHART (SF)
Measures participation (roles of individual in larger community) after disability
6 domains:
Physical independence, cog independence, mobility, occupation, social integration, and economic self-sufficiency
Mayo Portland Adaptability Inventory (MPAI-4)
Measures problems after brain injury
Can be self rated or rated by a clinician/S.O.
Ability index, adjustment index, and participation index
Designed to measure physical, cognitive, emotional, behavior, and social issues
The Participation Assessment with Recombined Tools- Objective
Objective measure of participation for individuals with mod-severe brain injury
3 domains:
Out and about, productivity, and social relations
What percent of brain injury patient’s have depression?
15-77%
McMaster family assessment device
Measures overall family functioning, as well as:
problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, and behavioral control.
Pediatric TBI Checklist
Gives framework for the areas of difficulty educators should be considering
Can be completed by parents, teacher, or 1:1 staff working with the child
Pediatric test of brain injury
Standardized test
Assesses the skills children need to return to school and function in the general education curriculum.
