Parkinson’s disease
- 2nd most common PND
- death of substantia nigra in the basal ganglia
What are the 2 subtypes of PD?
- familial PD - genetic factor
- sporadic PD - more common, genetic factor is unknown
What is the resting tremor (PD) described as?
“pill rolling” - tremors stop when the individual is asleep
What is the name of the gait disturbance (PD)?
“festinating gait” - shuffling gait pattern
Pre-clinical PD phase
- neurons have begun to degenerate
- no Sx evident
Prodromal PD phase
- can last months to years
- period before Sx fully manifest
- depression or anxiety present
- constipation
- rapid eye movement
- behavior disorder, fatigue
Symptomatic PD phase
- motor Sx are evident
- followed by progressive non-motor Sx
PD Sx - LMN
- weakness
- cramps
- atrophy
- twitching
PD Sx - corticospinal tract
spasticity and hyper reflexivity
PD Sx - corticobulbar tract
dysphagia and dysarthria
