Ch 20 - Radiology & Nuclear Medicine Flashcards
angiography
name of target arteries is used in front of this term to identify the specific artery or vein that is investigated
Ex) Coronary ______, Femoral ______, or Carotid ______
angiography
dye is usually injected into an artery so the areas where the dye “is” will show on the x-ray; the dye may travel to other targeted areas; x-rays are taken of the targeted areas
Angiography
a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside, or lumen, of blood vessels and organs of the body, with particular interest in the arteries, veins, and the heart chambers
Balloon angioplasty
procedure that opens blocked or narrowed blood vessels
Thrombolysis
dissolves blood clots
Angiocardiogram
x-ray record of the heart and great vessels made visible through the use of a radiopaque contrast medium
Angiocardiogram
term that is not used as frequently as the more common term of “Coronary Angiogram”
Arteriography
process of making an x-ray record of the arteries
Arthrography
process of making an x-ray record of a joint
Bronchogram
x-ray record of the bronchial tree made visible through the use of a radiopaque contrast medium
Cholangiogram
x-ray record of the bile ducts made visible through the use of a radiopaque contrast medium
Cholecystogram
x-ray record of the gallbladder made visible through the use of a radiopaque contrast medium
Echography
process of using ultrasound as a diagnostic tool by making a record of the echo produced when sound waves are reflected back through tissues of different density
Fluoroscopy
this process is used with a Cardiac Catheterization procedure
Fluoroscopy
process of examining internal structures by viewing the shadows cast on a fluorescent screen after the x-ray has passed through the body
Echography
frequently performed to diagnose heart valve problems; termed an “echocardiography” to identify the heart as the target organ
Hysterosalpinogogram (HSG)
X-ray record of the uterus and fallopian tubes that is made visible through the use of a radiopaque contrast medium
Hysterosalpinogogram (HSG)
is procedure is commonly preformed to determine patency of the fallopian tubes
Hysterosalpinogogram (HSG)
During this procedure, the patient is awake while dye is injected through the cervix (via the vagina) to view the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes by x-ray contrast
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
frequently used to diagnose renal calculi (kidney stones)
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
x-ray record of the kidney, renal pelvis, ureters, and bladder made visible through the use of an injected radiopaque contrast medium
Lymphangiogram
x-ray record of the lymph vessels made visible through the use of a radiopaque contrast medium
Lymphangiography
process of making an x-ray record of the lymph vessels
Mammography
process of obtaining x-ray pictures of the breast using a low-dose x-ray system
screening mammogram
mammogram used to detect breast cancer or other changes in the breast tissue in women who do not have symptoms
Diagnostic mammogram
mammogram which can be ordered when a screening mammogram shows something abnormal in the breast
may be ordered if the woman has symptoms that suggest breast cancer
Myelogram
x-ray record of the spinal cord made visible with a radiopaque contrast medium
Myelogram
during this procedure, the patient is awake, needle placed through skin into spinal canal and dye is injected; used to diagnose herniated disks or “pinched nerve in the back”
Radiography
process of making an x-ray record
Radiologist
an MD or DO who interprets x-rays and radiologic data; may have a sub-specialty
Radiology
scientific discipline of medical imaging using radionucleotides, ionizing radiation, nuclear magnetic resonance, and ultrasound
Radiology
a medical specialty, but also a department in a hospital or clinic that performs x-rays and other radiologic procedures
Sonogram
record produced by ultrasonography, usually identified by organ or structure
Ultrasonography (US)
process of using an ultrasound to produce a record of ultrasonic echoes as they strike tissues of different densities
Venography
process of making an x-ray record of veins (NOT arteries)
