What is evidence-informed practice?
A clinical practice based on a balance of three elements: current scientific evidence, clinical experience, and the client’s wishes
What is a case report/study?
A report or study for a healthcare provider regarding one client interaction or series of interactions. A case report is generally observational in nature, while a case study is based around a specific therapeutic question or theory.
What is a case series?
A series of case reports or studies on a specific pool of subjects, pathology, or treatment. It may lead to further study if the case series has important findings for the field of study. No control group is involved.
What are references?
The section of an article or report that credits others’ work. References are used to explore the background of a topic before undertaking any study.
What does a scope of practice do?
It defines the rights and activities legally acceptable according to the licenses of a particular occupation or profession. It limits what can be practiced. It is used n legal description and
definitions in licensing regulations.
What is the Massage Therapy Foundation?
A Not-for profit organization that is the nexus of massage therapy research. It offers service grants, clinical recommendations, and funding for important research in the field of massage therapy.
What is continuing education?
Any class or workshop a professional attends that relates to his or her profession or practice after graduation from the initial training.
What is an abstract?
A short synopsis of an article, paper, or report.
What is a meta-analysis?
A systematic review that uses quantitative methods to summarize the results.
What is research?
A systematic and organized attempt to test a hypothesis and determine if an observation has validity.
What does validity do?
It dictates how an experimental design is structured and encompasses all of the steps of the scientific research method.
What is research literacy?
The ability to locate, comprehend, and evaluate valid information and, if applicable, apply it to clinical practice
What is a systematic review?
An article in which the authors have systematically searched for, appraised, and summarized all of the medical literature for a specific topic.
What can scope of practice be limited by?
Personal limitations such as:
* Belief systems
* Personal bias
* Choice of preferred clientele
* Physical stature or endurance
What do state massage boards have responsibility for?
Interpreting and enforcing massage laws
Approving applicants for massage licensing
Overseeing testing and licensing procedures
Protecting the public and reviewing complaints
Issuing disciplinary actions
