What is Perception?
The process of interpreting and analyzing impressions to give them meaning to us and our environment
What are the factors that influence our perception and give an example of each
- The Perceiver: I.E their attitude, motives or interests
- The Target: I.E it’s novelty, motions, or sounds
- The Situation: I.E the time, work or social setting.
What is Attribution Theory?
Attribution Theory attempts to explain why we judge people differently, depending on what we attribute to it’s given behaviour. It breaks it down into “internal” or “external” causes, and relies on three rules of behaviour. 1. Distinctiveness, 2. Consensus, and
3. Consistency
What are some perceptual errors that can affect the workplace?
- Selective Perception: Only observing the things you “select”, or things that interest you.
- Halo Effect: Drawing a broad impression of a person based on a single characteristic you like.
- Contrast Effects: The contrasting of someone with a previous person you met.
- Stereotyping: Judging someone based on a perception of a group to which they belong to
What does perception and judgement matter in the workplace?
Because they can have a huge effect on the following:
- Employment Interviews
- Work Performance Evaluation
- Work Performance Expectations
What is Personality?
Personality is the sum of how we react and interact with others.
What are Personality Traits?
Personality Traits are the enduring characteristics observed in an individual.
What are some frame works used to measure personality and their traits?
- The Myer-Briggs Type Indicator
- The Big Five Personality Model
- The Dark Triad
What are Emotions?
Emotions are intense feelings directed at someone or something
What are Moods?
Moods are less intense feelings and are not caused by specific events or stimuli
What are Affects?
Affects are a generic term that covers a broad range of feelings people experience.
