Ch 2: Atomic Structure and Theory Flashcards
Define: electrons
Small, negatively charged subatomic particles that orbit around an atom’s positively charged nucleus.
Define: proton
Positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom.
Define: neutrons
Subatomic particles with a smaller mass than their partner proton in the nucleus, but with no electrical (+ or -) charge.
Give the symbol and mass of an Electron
e- | 9.11 x 10 to the -28
Give the symbol and mass of a Proton
p+ | 1.675 x 10 to the -24
Give the symbol and mass of a Neutron
n | 1.675 x 10 to the -24
Define: molecule
A composition of atoms which are chemically bonded by attractive forces.
Define: molecular formula
A method of writing a substance’s exact number of different atoms
Define: structural formulas
A diagram which shows how specific atoms are arranged and bonded in a compound
How much more mass does a proton have than an electron?
Roughly double
What are the 3 components of an atom?
Electrons and nucleus (protons and neutrons)
