Authority
Relates to empowered duties of an official to perform certain tasks. Refers to the legal ability of an individual to make and implement decisions for which an individual is held accountable.

Side stepping
The process of going around a link in the chain of command to deal with an issue
Skip Level Notification
Notifying ones superior that one wishes to take an issue to the supervisor’s supervisor
Functional Supervisor
Organizational principle that allows workers to more than one supervisor without violating the unity of command
Workers report to their primary supervisor for most activities but report to a second supervisor for activities that relate to an assignment function only, and both supervisors coordinate closely
Municipal
Functional division of the lowest level of local government

Designated geographical area where fire protection is provided, usually through a supporting tax, or an area where fire prevention codes are enforced. Also known as Fire protection district and regional fire authority
State/Provincial
Territory occupied by one of the constituent administrative districts of a nation who’s rights are defines by a constitution
Federal
National level government such as U.S. And Canada. Federal land and properties
Tribal
Government structure of Native American and Aboriginal people of North America. ( First Nation, Aboriginal, Inuit, and Metis)
Tribal government have sovereignty over their land based on agreements with U.S. and Canada.
Also, have local agreement with state/provincial agencies within the boundaries they exist.
Trained, equipped, and funded by the U.S Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Dept. of Indian and Northern Affairs in Canada
Career Firefighter
Paid for their services, person who’s primary employment is as a firefighter with in a fire dept.
Paid-on-cal personnel
Paid per response. Person who is spends to fires and emergencies and is paid on a response to response basis
Mutual aid
Reciprocal assistance from one fire service agency to another during an emergency, based upon prearranged agreements, generally made upon the request of the recurring agency
Automatic aid
Written agreement between two or more agencies to automatically dispatch predetermined resources to any fire or other emergency reported in the geographical area covered by the agreement. These are generally located near jurisdictional boundaries or in jurisdictional islands
Outside aid
Assistance from agencies, industries, or fire depts. that are not part of the agencies jurisdiction. (Payment for each response or an annual fee, rather than reciprocal aid)
