Ch. 2 Flashcards
Burden of Proof
Obligation to present evidence to support ones claims.
Falsifiable
Terms that are stated clearly and precisely allowing us to see what evidence would count against it.
Parsimony
When given a list of theories the theory that is fewer, simpler, and more consistent is chosen over well stated facts.
Correlation Study
A study that takes place between two variables where they are measured but not controlled by investigators.
Independent Variable
Item in experiment that changes or controls.
Dependent Variable
Item in experiment that is used to measure the extent of possibilities.
Reliability
Degree to which a test produces similar scores each time it is used.
Validity
The extent to which a test measures what it was intended to measure.
Correlation
A measure of the relationship between two variables.
Scientific Theory
An explanation or model that fits observations and makes valid predictions.
Descriptive statistics
Statistical procedures that are used to summarize sets of scores which respect to central tendencies, variability, and correlation.
Inferential statistics
Statistical procedures that allow researchers to determine weather the results they obtain support their hypothesis or can be attributed to chance variation.
Probability Value
Probability that randomly generated results would resemble the observed results is less than 5% or 1%
Variable
Anything that can be changed or controlled in an experiment.
Naturalistic observations
Observing subject in natural environment
