Astigmatism
defect or curvature in the cornea or lens of the eye
Hyperopia (hypermetropia)
far sightedness
Myopia
near sightedness
Cataract
clouding of the lens of the eye, which causes a decrease in vision
How to correct a cataract?
Have the cataract extracted and implant a new lens
Chalazion
inflamed small hard cystic mass or granuloma on the eyelid
What area of the eye does a chalazion affect?
sebaceous gland in the eyelid
Diabetic Retinopathy
retinal effects of diabetes mellitus include microaneurysms (bursting of vessels), hemorrhages, dilation of retinal veins
Neuvascularization
new blood vessels will form in the retina
Glaucoma
increased intraocular pressure, damages the retina and optic nerve which causes vision loss
Hordeolum (stye or sty)
draining pus and it’s caused by a staphylococcal infection
What area of the eye does a hordeolum affect?
sebaceous gland in the eyelid
Macular Degeneration
progressive damage to the macula of the retina
Retinal Detachment
trauma to the eye or a head injury; separation of the 2 layers of the retina
Strabismus
abnormal deviation of the eye
Esotropia
eye that is turning inward; cross-eyed
Exotropia
eye that is turning outward; wall-eyed
Hypertropia
upward deviation of one eye
Hypotropia
downward devation of one eye
Amblyopia
partial loss of vision, lazy eye
Diplopia
double vision
Ophthalmoscopy
simple visual examination of the interior of the eye
Visual Acuity Test
clarity of vision test; where we asses what the patient’s vision is
Snellen chart
typical eye chart
How is visual acuity expresed?
a ration like 20/20
What is the first number of the ration
distance the patient is standing from the chart
What is the second number of the ration?
distance at which a person with normal vision could read the same line of the chart
Visual Field Test
measures the peripheral and central vision
Enucleation
removal of the entire eyeball
Keratoplasty
surgical repair of the cornea; cornea transplant
Laser Photocoagulation
using an argon laser to create an inflammatory reaction used to seal retinal tears and repair leaky retinal blood vessels
LASIK
use of an excimer laser to correct areas of refraction like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism
Vitrectomy
removal of the vitreous humor
HEENT
head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat
IOL
intraocular lens
LASIK
laser in situ keramileusis
OD
right eye
OS
left eye
OU
both eyes
PERRLA
pupils equal, round, reactive to light and accomodation
VA
visual acuity
VF
visual field
Pinna or auricle
outer ear, the projecting flap
Auditory canal
external auditory meatus
Cerumen
ear wax and it protects and lubricates the ear
Tympanic membrane
Ear drum, sound waves travel from the auditory canal and strike a membrane between the outer ear and middle ear
Ossicles
ear drum vibrates and moves 3 small bones (malleus, incus, stapes)
Oval window
stapes move, it touches a membrane which separates the middle ear from the inner ear
Auditory tube or Eustachian tube
the canal that leads from the middle ear to the pharynx
Cochlea
inner ear, labyrinth, leads from the oval window is a bony snail-shaped structure
What else is the ear important for besides hearing?
A person’s equilibrium and balance
Vestibule
connects the cochlea for hearing to 3 semi-circular canals for balance
