Ch 16 General Sensation Flashcards
What are the general senses?
visceral: information from internal organs processed at reflex centers in the brainstem and diencephalon
somatic: information from skin, skeletal muscles, joints processed at thalamus and then sent to somatosensory cortex
How are general senses different from special senses?
general senses involve the body while special senses involve the head/brain
6 general senses
touch, pressure, stretch, movement, heat, cold, pain
Reception definition
sensory receptors detect a change in stimulus
Transduction definition
sensory receptor detects an arriving stimulus and converts it into an action potential that can be sent to the central nervous system
Sensation definition
arrival of sensory information at the central nervous system
Perception definition
conscious awareness of a sensation
What four types of information do sensory receptors transmit?
modality, location, intensity, duration
Modality definition
type of stimulus based of type of receptor
Location definition
receptive fields
Intensity definition
frequency of action potential and number of neurons
Duration definition
fast or quick adapting
Receptive field definition
area monitored by single receptor cell
Phasic receptors definition
perception of stimulus disappears quickly
Tonic receptors definition
slowly adapting receptors
