Ch. 16 Bones, Muscles, and Skin Flashcards
cardiac muscle
involuntary muscle that is found only in the heart
cartilage
thick, slippery tissue layer covering the ends of bones, absorbs shock and helps make joint movements easier by reducing friction
dermis
layer of tissue beneath the dermis, contains blood vessels, nerves, and oil and sweat glands
epidermis
outer layer of the skin, constantly produces new cells to replace those that are rubbed off
immovable joint
type of joint that allows little or no movement
involuntary muscle
muscles such as cardiac muscles, that can’t be consciously controlled
joint
place where two or more bones meet, may be immovable, such as in the skull, or movable, such as in the hip
ligament
touch band of tissue that holds bones together at joints
marrow
fatty, soft tissue in the center of long bones and the spaces of spongy bones, produces red blood cells and while blood cells
melanin
pigment that gives skin its color
movable joint
type of joint that allows a wide range of movements
muscle
organ that relaxes and contracts to allow movement of bones and body parts
periosteum
touch, tight- fitting membrane that covers the surface of bones
skeletal muscle
stated, voluntary muscles that move bones
skeletal system
all the bones in the body, gives the body shape and support, protects internal organs, forms blood cells, stores minerals for later use, and provides for muscle attachment
