Ch 15 Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the primary function of the respiratory system?
exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide.
What are the secondary functions of the respiratory systems?
voice production
body temperature regulation
acid-base balance regulation
sense of smell
What is breathing?
The process of drawing air into the lungs and exhaling it out.
What is the process of respiration?
Bringing oxygen(O2) from outside of the body to the cells in the body and exchange for carbon dioxide(CO2) and carry it out of the body.
What is internal respiration?
Occurs throughout the body and exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood in the systemic capillaries, and cells and tissues.
What is external respiration?
Occurs in the lungs and exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air in the lungs and pulmonary capillaries.
Where does external respiration occur?
In the lungs.
