CH 15 Energy Flashcards
Energy
The ability to do work or produce heat
The law of conservation of energy
 States that in any chemical reaction or physical process energy can be converted from one form to another but it is neither created nor destroyed.
Chemical potential energy
The energy that is stored in a substance because of it’s composition
Heat
The energy that is in the process of flowing form a warmer object to a cooler object
Joule
The SI unit for energy and heat
Specific heat
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of that substance by 1 degree Celsius
Equation for calculating heat
q= c • m • 🔼T
q = heat absorbed or released
c = specific heat of the substance
m = Mass of sample in grams
T = change of temperature in degrees Celsius
