Ch 14 Types Of Mixtures Flashcards
Mixtures can be either…
Heterogeneous or homogeneous
What is a heterogeneous mixture
Hetero genus mixture does not blend smoothly throughout and the individual substances remain distinct
What are the two types of heterogenus mixtures
Suspension mixtures and thixotropic mixtures
Suspension mixture
A mixture containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed
Ex. Muddy water will separate by itself if you just let it sit for a while
Thixotropic mixture
Make sure is that separate into a solid like make sure on the bottom and water on the top. When the salted like mixture is stirred or agitated it flows like a liquid.
Ex. Toothpaste and paint
Colloids
Consist of particles larger than the ordinary molecules but too small to me seen by the naked eye
- can’t be separated through use of filter
What are two ways you can interfere with the electrostatic layering of colloids
- Stir an electrolyte into it- particles will clump together
- Heat it up- gives it enough kinetic energy to break free of electrostatic forces
Brownian motions
The erratic movements of colloid particles
Tyndall effect
A phenomenon in which dispersed colloid particles scatter light
True or false:
Suspensions and solutions both exhibit the Tyndall effect
False: solutions never exhibit the Tyndall effect
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture with a solute and a solvent
- Aka a solution
True or false:
Both liquids and solutes can exist in different forms
True
Soluble substance
A substance that dissolves in a solvent
Ex. Sugar in water
Miscible
Two solutions that are soluble in each other in any proportion
Insoluble substance
A substance that does not dissolve in a solvent
Ex. Sand in water
